Bluebonnets 2012

Springtime in Texas is really beautiful — the wildflowers are everywhere. I tried to get some photos of the kids in a field of bluebonnets but trying to get them to look at me, let alone smile, was like pulling teeth. After nearly 300 photos — thank heaven for digital cameras — these are the best that I got.

This was the car ride over to the field.

Life with Raine 2

My recording of Raine-isms is pretty hit-and-miss these days. It seems like I am never in a position to record the really good ones. Here are the few that I have recorded since my last post, along with some photos.

Raine and I were waiting for Carter to wake up so we could go to the grocery store. Raine picked up my grocery list and started “reading”:
Raine: “We need oranges and swiss cheese and tomatoes and we need to go to the toy store to get some toys . . . “
Me: “What!?!!!”
Raine: “And we need to go to the green Target to get some doughnuts.”
I had never noticed that the entrances to Target were different colors until Raine started talking about wanting to go to the “green Target,” not the “blue Target.” She knows that the green doors are on the side of the store where the doughnuts are . . . very observant!

I was folding my temple dress to put into my bag and Raine asked what I was doing. I told her that I was going to the temple. She got very excited and said, “Oh, are you going to get married!!!”

Monday, August 22, 2011
At lunch today I was telling Raine what something meant (I can’t remember now what it was). She kept telling me that it didn’t mean that, and I would insist that it did. I finally got fed up and said, “Then what does it mean?” Out of nowhere she says, “It means . . . no worries!”

It was the middle of the afternoon, the kids were playing in the playroom, when all-of-a-sudden Raine ran out of the room. Daddy went to check on her and found her in the bedroom changing her underpants and shorts.
Daddy: “How come you’re changing clothes? Are those wet?”
Raine, very matter-of-fact: “I have to change them ’cause I fluffed in my other underpants.”

Raine’s turn to count while playing hide-and-seek: “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, percent, dollars, fifty.”

Raine: “Do chickens lay eggs for people to eat?”
Mom: “Yep, they do.”
Raine: “And do people lay eggs for chickens to eat?”
Mom, laughing: “No silly, people don’t lay eggs.”
Raine: “Oh.”

Raine had been snitching treats all morning. When she woke up in the morning, the first thing she did was find a stool, climb up on the kitchen counter, get down the bag of M&M’s from the top shelf, and start eating. Later, DJ found her with the Hershey bars left over from our camping trip. When I went into her room to get out her church clothes, I found a half-eaten rope of licorice. I asked her about it and she happily admitted snitching it. Then she said, “Well, I KNOW Heavenly Father loves me!”
What do you say to that!?!!

Sam Houston National Forest

This past weekend we went on a family camping trip to the Sam Houston National Forrest. We spent two nights at the Double Lake Campground riding bikes, hiking, and swatting mosquitoes! The Rumsey’s came up Friday night; it was so much fun having them there.

The campground had a paved trail around the lake that was perfect for our trailer. Friday morning we rode around, stopping often to look at the scenery. Saturday morning Shannan and Davis watched the kids while Daddy and I rode the real trails. We had so much fun bouncing over roots, lifting our bikes over fallen trees, and slogging through mud. The trail wound through dense trees, it was very picturesque.

Here we are at one of the stops along our family bike ride.

These kids love picking wild flowers. Fortunately, there were plenty to be picked!

This photo is going on my wall; I love being a mom!

Raine found a tree to climb, so of course this little monkey had to do it too.

When Shannan and Alexa arrived, they brought a bike for Raine to ride. This was Raine’s first time on a “big-kid” bike . . . she was in heaven! Saturday morning, she and Alexa rode all around the lake on the paved trail.

Alexa and Raine making St Patrick’s Day crafts.

Carter made one too.

“Sheeez.” I used to think that saying “cheese” made you smile when taking a photo, but Carter consistently proves that theory wrong!

Raine and Carter kept themselves busy chasing bugs while we packed up the truck Saturday afternoon.

What a fun camping trip!

Swish!

I knew this basketball hoop would be a big hit. About a week ago, Carter started throwing his basketball onto the stove every chance he got. In order to prevent a serious disaster, I tracked down something else for him to throw the ball into. He is a natural!

Carter’s “18-month” checkup

I kinda missed the boat with Carter’s routine maintenance so he was a little late on his 18-month checkup — late to the tune of a month-and-a-half. I guess I was so excited for him to start nursery that I forgot about anything else!

Here are his current stats (the percentiles reflect his current age):
Weight: 27 lb 0 oz – just above the 50th %ile
Height: 34.5 in – just below the 90th %ile

Here are a couple of photos that I took the other day.

What would we do without neighbors who don’t use weed-n-feed? Carter wouldn’t have any flowers to pick!

It’s a dirty job helping momma make bread . . . especially when you’re only as tall as the bowl and momma turns up the speed before all the flour has been mixed in!

Tumbling

Today was the last day of Raine’s tumbling class at the rec center so parents were invited to watch. Here they are stretching:

(The kids were so distracted, no wonder parents don’t normally get to be in the gym during class.)
The crab-walk:

Before class, Raine told me that the bars were her favorite, so she was pretty excited that they happened to be doing bars today.

Raine is one of the only kids in her class who can hold herself up above the bar . . . pretty impressive!

Watching Raine attempt to do a back-bend always reminds me just how much she is my daughter. We are both about as flexible as a two-by-four!

At the end of class, Ms Tammy gives the kids a stamp on their hand if they did well. The kids LOVE getting their stamp and anxiously wait with their hands on top of their heads.

Ms Tammy is a fabulous teacher; the kids love her. The moms love her too, because she really won’t give the kids a stamp if they didn’t earn it. She teaches them how to follow instructions and she follows through with her threats when they misbehave.

Here is Raine on the balance beam two weeks ago — it’s a horrible phone photo but it’s all I had.
